How does hearing work?

  1. Sound moves through the ear canal and strikes the eardrum.
  2. Sound waves cause the eardrum to vibrate, sending the bones in the middle ear (ossciles) into motion.
  3. This motion causes the fluid inside the inner ear (cochlea) to move tiny hairs called cilia.
  4. The movement of the cilia creates electric impulses upon hearing (auditory) nerves and the impulses are sent into the brain and you hear sound.
