What are the types of hearing loss and causes?

There are three main types of hearing loss

  • Sensorineural: problem within the inner ear (cochlear) or auditory nerve.
  • Conductive: problem with the middle or outer ear including ear canal, ear drum, ossicles, and middle ear cavity.
  • Mixed: a combination of both conductive and sensorineural hearing loss.

Some common causes Normal ageing process, excessive noise exposure, genetics, menieres disease, viruses, ototoxic drugs such as chemotherapy and some antibiotics, meningitis, head injury, tumour. Otosclerosis (stiffening of the ossciles), middle ear infections, Eustachian tube dysfunction, perforated ear drums, cholesteatomas, ear wax buildup, head injury.
Symptoms Tinnitus (ringing in ears), difficulty hearing particularly in background noise, withdrawal from conversation and social settings, missing certain environmental sounds such as alarms and birds, sensitivity to loud sounds, learning problems for school children, inattentiveness. Similar to Sensorineural loss in addition to- discharge from the ears, perception of clicking sounds, pain/discomfort, own voice echoes.
